Meetings & Events

We hold monthly meetings at 8pm at the Latton Bush Centre in Harlow (see below for location details). We organise a range of interesting and informative talks, discuss Group matters, hold a raffle and chat over a cup of tea and a biscuit or two.

Everyone is welcome to attend. To cover our costs there’s a £2.50 door charge and this includes the raffle. If you’re not a member or are coming for the first time feel free to introduce yourself to one of the committee members (they’ll be wearing a name badge) and you’ll be warmly welcomed.

Wednesday 7th January 2009, Quiz, John Oakley
Our Chief Observer has an evening to test your knowledge of the Highway Code and other motoring related topics, come along to get to know other members of the group for an enjoyable evening, only the highest score will be revealed though I feel sure most of us will learn a little, an evening we encourage associates to attend.

Wednesday 11th February, First Aid,  British Red Cross
Jill from the British Red Cross has kindly agreed to return to give practical demonstrations of basic first aid. An opportunity to refresh your memory on what to do in an emergency.

Wednesday 11th March, Accident Investigation, Trevor Dickenson
Trevor, ex-Police Officer and currently Staff Examiner at IAM Head Office will give a talk about his work as an accident investigator. This will be an illustrated talk showing the work that is undertaken to establish the cause of an accident.

Wednesday 8th April, The Advanced Test and Q&A, Graham Summersgill
Another of our examiners will give tips and details of an examiners expectations followed by time for you to put your questions to him. Members will pick up reminders of good driving and associates are encouraged to come and hear from an examiner.
Wednesday 13th May
Last year Chris Gilbert came to talk to us about the beneifts of a commentary when driving and when it can be used during the test.  We purcahsed his DVD and will be showing it tonight.  There will be a chance to put questions to one of our observers. The dvd will be available on loan after the meeting.
Wednesday 10th June, Thames River Police, John Robinson
John is ex Thames River police and has not spoken to any IAM groups before, his talk is entitled “how I got here“ and covers his career with the river police and the last few years which include currently training emergency services to rescue vessels.
Saturday 13th June, Skid Pan (Discounted & Subsidised)
We’re returning to Essex Skid Pan who have given us a discount.   The group will additionally subsidise ehwe-iam members by £10 each, a half day session will therefore cost £35.  Non members also welcome (£45).
Expert coaching in skid avoidance/control by ex-traffic police in their bangers cars on an oil-based skid pan.  More info and booking.
Wednesday 8th July
David Pratt has kindly agreed to come and talk about his role as a local magistrate.  This will be a chance to find out how magistrates are appointed and how they enforce the law.
Wednesday 12th August
Elaine Beckett Senior Road Saftey Officer – Education and Development, last year Elaine came to talk to us about her work as a saftey officer in Essex, she returns to tell us more about her current work, last year she was very enthusiastic and informative about what is being done to ensure our saftey as drivers and pedestrians.
Wednesday 9th September
Len Little is new to us and will meet us to talk about the training and use of police dogs.  Len is a new speaker to the group and enlighten us on the life of a working dog and what they can be used for to help the police force with their work.
Wednesday 7th October
This months meeting is entitled “Thinking Driver” it will be a talk by John Oakley our Chief observer accompanied by a DVD.  This is to give a chance for members and associates to get involved in a discussion on the points raised by John.speaker details to be confirmed
